Candyman

In September, Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele will release a new version of the horror tale Candyman, which reinterprets the urban legend that many have heard from friends' older siblings during sleepovers. The project is directed by Nia DaCosta, known for her work on Little Woods.

The story centers around the neighborhood of Cabrini Green in Chicago, where residents have long told stories of a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, a ghostly figure believed to be summoned by saying his name five times into a mirror. This legend persisted as a fearsome myth, especially after the original Cabrini Green towers were demolished.

A decade following the gentrification of the area, visual artist Anthony McCoy, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II—known for HBO's Watchmen and the film Us—and his girlfriend Brianna Cartwright, played by Teyonah Parris—star of If Beale Street Could Talk and The Photograph—move into a luxury loft in the now heavily gentrified Cabrini Green, which has become home to young, upwardly mobile residents.
